Glaucoma Screening
Glaucoma can develop without obvious symptoms — which is why early detection matters.
Our Glaucoma Screening & Early Detection Assessment evaluates eye pressure, optic nerve health, retinal nerve fibre structure and visual function to help identify signs that may be associated with glaucoma and determine whether further monitoring or specialist assessment is needed.
What We Assess
| Eye Pressure (IOP) | Measures intraocular pressure, which is an important risk factor for glaucoma. |
| Optic Nerve Assessment | Examines the appearance of the optic nerve for changes that may require further investigation. |
| OCT Imaging | Uses Optical Coherence Tomography to assess the retinal nerve fibre layer and optic nerve structure in greater detail. |
| Visual Field | Evaluates peripheral vision for patterns of visual field loss that may be associated with glaucoma. |
Who Should Consider This Assessment?
- People aged 40 years and above with a family history of glaucoma
- Patients with diabetes or other relevant eye health risk factors
- Anyone requiring ongoing monitoring of the optic nerve, eye pressure or visual field
- Anyone experiencing gradual or unexplained changes in vision
- Patients already diagnosed with glaucoma, who require regular and ongoing follow-up to monitor their condition and manage their eye health
More Than Just an Eye Pressure Check
Glaucoma cannot be assessed by eye pressure alone. Some people with glaucoma may have eye pressure within the normal range, while others may have higher pressure without optic nerve damage.
Our optometrists therefore consider your eye pressure, optic nerve appearance, OCT findings, visual field results and individual risk factors together before recommending the next step.
Why Early Detection Matters
Glaucoma-related vision loss is usually permanent, but early detection allows suspicious changes to be monitored and treated appropriately. If your results indicate an increased risk of glaucoma or possible optic nerve damage, our optometrist can refer you to an ophthalmologist for further assessment and management.
